I have an icon in my quick launch, which I believe is from Norton. (I
uninstalled Norton, after much pain, last week. It is worse than a virus to
get rid of) I think it is Norton, when I mouse over it, it says downloading
updates 0%, and is in the shape of a yellow shield.
However, it responds to nothing: neither right click, or left click, or drag
& drop in recycle. Reboot does nothing. I used the Norton uninstall tool a
few times. I think it is Norton, but can't be positive.
Any suggestions?

If it says that, it can't possibly be in Quick Launch. Do you mean in the
Notification Area (aka System tray), the area next to the clock?

and is in the shape of a yellow shield.

I can't remember what Norton updates notification looks like, but the yellow
shield description sounds like it's Windows Updates.

Are you sure it is in "Quick Launch" and not in the tray?
Have you run any cleaning programs like CrapCleaner or BeClean?
I have links to them and some other programs listed on my pages (see
below).

I believe you are referirng to the Notification Area, try this:
Open the Windows explorer and locate these pATHS:
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
Delete the Entry in the above paths.

Open a Run command and type in:
regedit.exe click [OK]
On the Registry Editor locate these Keys:
[-]HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrenyVersion\Run =
Delete any Entry in the Right Pane/Window for Norton.
[-]HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrenyVersion\RunOnce =
Delete any Entry in the Right Pane/Window for Norton.

[-]HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrenyVersion\Run =
Delete any Entry in the Right Pane/Window for Norton.
[-]HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrenyVersion\RunOnce =
Delete any Entry in the Right Pane/Window for Norton.

= Another is openning the Run Command and type in:
msconfig click [OK]
On the System Configuration window click on StartUp Tab and uncheck the Line
for the Norton.
HTH.
Let us know.

Hi,

That's got to be the Windows Automatic Update icon in the System Tray
(on the right-hand side of the Taskbar). If there are no current
updates it just sits there at 0% and eventually goes away. Just leave
it. the only way to stop it would be to turn off Automatic Updates.
But I'm not sure you would want to do that.

It is the system tray-- sorry.

I'll try these solutions, and let you know how I do. Thanks everyone for
taking the time to help. (It's only a small thing, but as you know, these
small things can be annoying!)

News flash! The icon disappeared, on re-boot this afternoon. In spite of the
fact that I had rebooted at least 6 times since the "little problem" started
several days ago, it just disappeared today. Still not sure if it is Norton,
or Windows update, but will keep a close eye at next Windows update.
Norton--- I hope is gone for good!
Thanks all for responses.
