Hi,

I removed by accident my internal CD/DVD using the utility 'Remove Hardware'
that popped-up in the notification area in the right-under corner of the
screen. My DVD is complete dead and is nowhere visible anymore. The
mecanical bay does not even want to come out if I push it. So can I cannot
even reinstall my WindowsXP because of the dead DVD drive.

How can I undo my "remove hardware" and get my DVD (driver) back??

thanks, johan

Boot into Safe Mode, open Device Manager, see if there is a listing for any
CD/DVD devices, remove/delete them, reboot, verify the CD/DVD device is seen
by the BIOS, if the device is listed in the BIOS - reboot, and Windows
should redetect the now new hardware.

it should come back simply by rebooting

Assuming you can still boot to Windows:
1) With PC power off, disconnect the IDE cable connected to the DVD drive.
2) Boot to Windows.
3) Totally shut down Windows and the PC and reconnect the CD/DVD cable.
4) Reboot to Windows, Windows should report it found new hardware and
install the appropriate driver.
5) Note: If you have an OEM Version of Windows then install the driver from
that CD.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I already solved the problem by downloading and
installing the latest DVD driver from the manufacturer. Now it works as
before.
Before that, I've rebooted the computer several times but no go.
I have a sony laptop. So opening up the computer and disconnecting the DVD
cable is not obvious to do.
