Remove hard drive?

I was told that the motherboard on my old computer is fried. (There is
power to the unit, however there is no activity of my monitor, printer
or scanner).

I recently purchased a new CPU.

Is there a way to transfer information and files from my old hard drive
to my new one? (Will I need to remove my old hard drive to do so?) Both
computers run Windows XP.

Thanks!
Ken

I have had to do this myself and it was relatively easy. I took the old HD
out of the fried PC and all I really had to do was to change a jumper to
tell the the system that it was a slave. Then (if you'll notice) there's a
flat (or round) cable that has a connector in between the HD and the
motherboard, that's where you plug in the old HD.

When you remove the old hard drive, look at the label on the top.. then go
to the manufacturer website for info on jumper settings.. print out the
page, and set the drive accordingly, slave if it is second in line..

Here's a link on one way to do it.

I believe that the key to a successful transfer of this sort is to keep as
much of the system intact as you can. Use the same model/revision for
replacement parts if possible. Otherwise Windows may get locked up trying to
detect all the new hardware changes.
