I want to remove the first domain controller I upgraded
from Windows NT 4 to Windows 2000 server. I have followed
the steps to move the 5 FSMO roles to other controllers.
Is there anything else I need to do or do I just demote it
with dcpromo? Do I need to do anything with Ntdsutil.exe?

You must also not forget about DNS server if this server held one. Also make
sure, that you still have at least one Global Catalog on your network. After
that, you can run dcpromo and remove AD from the server. Before you run
dcpromo, try unplugging the server from the network and check, that the
clients can still authenticate to the domain and that all services still
function.
