Any freeware to just remove the scratch clicks from a vinyl recording I
have transferred to my hd before I burn it to disk?

I know there are many programs, some costly, that do that and a lot
more, but all I need to do is get rid of the clicks.

I have Cool-Edit Pro which can remove SOME clicks from SOME
recordings. It is a bit of a hit & miss affair, depending on the
original.

If you like to post your MP3 recording to alt.binaries.test, I am glad
to download it and try to do the job, then upload the new file.

If you are not happy with the reuslt, it will only have cost you some
bandwidth. HJSplit the file into 5000kb parts for easier
uploading/downloading.

E-mail me (e-mail address removed) with the filename when you have
uploaded the files.

Cheers,

Cheers,
Thanks, but I have a bunch of records and the recordings are .wav files.
Doing this for a friend who only has a cd player. Records are old and in
poor shape.

this is the first freeware click remover i have seen. I have yet to
use it so you get to test drive it and tell me how it goes.

I recall using Goldwave some time back that had that utility in its
effects list. The version I downloaded allowed 150 actions for free.
Unfortunately I have no knowledge of what the terms are for current
versions of Goldwave.

I did end up with goldwave. It is exceptional but is shareware. You do
get 150 clicks but only have to reload it and it will continue to work.
I usually buy the good shareware and it seems to be one. The .wav I
cleaned up was very good. I played the burned file on my friends cd
player and it was exceptional compared to what I started with. So very
happy.

Interesting that I was fine with the ones I burned for myself but wanted
to do better for my friend. Now I will have to go back and reburn all my
collection. Get rid of the clicks.

Thanks to all.

Has Cool Edit Pro really gone freeware? If so, please give me the URL.

Not as far as I can tell, but Windows Plus Digital Media Edition contains
CoolEdit technology in its analog recorder, so I'll be picking it up for
$8.00 at CompUSA today.

Neat. However, $8.00 is not freeware. This group is supposed to be for
the discussion of freeware. Please try to stay on topic.

Try the WAV editor.

Unfortunately not - while excellent at DIGITAL clicks in a bad CD rip,
it's pretty useless against analog clicks, or digital ones that have
been through any lossy compression - the same is tru of a couple of
other free click eliminators.

Audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net has a plugin development
language called Nyquist - but my eyes just glaze over when I try to
figure it out.

Logic dictates that one approach would be to scan the wave file ahead
(or read backwards) looking for sharp amplitude drops (backwards
=rises) as many normal sounds have a sharp rise, but few other than an
unwanted scratch have a sharp fall - for severe radial scratches, the
33 1/3 rpm periodicity could also be used as a predictor.

Well, there's the analysis, can anyone figure out how to program it as
an Audacity plugin?
