I use a "Xinix" motorized unit from cyberguys.com. It's about $30 and cheaply
built but I've cleaned up a lot of scratched DVDs with it.

It uses rubber buffers and liquid abraisive.

I use liquid automobile polishing compound. Turtle Wax makes a good one.
It's
at least as effective as those expensive specialty products.

Regular white toothpaste is supposed to work too. I tired it once on a CD
that always got a CRC error at 80% of the install and it didn't work for me.
The game used to install fine and then one day years later I decide to
re-install it and it has gone defective even though it was never touched all
these years.

Well, some people say it works anyway. I've given the CD to a friend with
one of those CD repair kits and he is going to see if it fixes it or not. I
never even played that game past the first couple of levels either so it's a
bummer.

Some/most toothpaste contains diatomaceous earth which is a *very* mild
abrasive and while tootpaste is not transparent, it does wash off.

I'm not sure what the index of refraction is on a CD but if close to glass
there is a last ditch UNTRIED method that might work.
The material they use in the kits that fix bullseyes on car windshields
would be worth a shot.

That's always what I try first, and it usually does the trick.
Toothpaste is mildly abrasive, and I use it as a buffing compound,
rubbing radially over the scratch with a cotton rag. Then I wash the
disk in warm water and try playing it again. If it works, I make a copy
real quick!
