How do I disable programs from automatically starting
when I boot my computer?

I am using Windows XP, and after I start & Login MSN
Messenger, MSN Today, and a few other programs appear on
my desktop that I do not want to start automatically.

Check for exemple in registry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell
Folders
There you can find a folder where some shortcuts are stored.

Another location is
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

if this not helps, try to find the .exe name of file you don't wnat to be
automaticly open (in TaskMenager for ex.) and then use find in regedit tool.

Hi Chris,

Go to Start/Run and type in: msconfig. Go to the Startup Tab and uncheck
accordingly. Then run this script to remove the disabled items from the
registry.

Or...remove the runkeys from here: Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Hi I might be able to help you out with msn messenger, I
had the same problem when I loged onto the internet msn
would automaticaly log itself on, to stop this from
occuring I. Whent into messenger and clicked on tools,
then options, then I clicked on the preferences tab and
under the general heading I deselected 'Run this program
when Windows starts. Oh and then of course I clicked on
ok. And it has seemed to have worked, messenger does not
start up automatically any more.

hope this was helpful.

There is a small, very handy, program (StartUp Control Panel from Mike Lin)
that will let you check which programs automatically start up, you can
disable what you like in the list. If you make a mistake and things don't
work the way you want them any more, you can put back the programs to start
up again with a simple checkmark.
