Remove and Replace Global catalog server

I need to take the global catalog server out of service
and replace the hardware. This server is also the
Exchange 2000 server.

The active directory domain has been in service for 3
years. There are some problem issues with the AD domain
that also need resolving. When I take the server down for
any length of time others cannot log-in even though the
AD is replicated to 5 other servers.

My thought are to load a new server with a fresh AD using
the same domain name and server name of the machine to be
replaced. Take all servers down and place the new server
online then bring up the other servers and join them back
into the AD.

Any thoughts? Best practices? Other ways to accomplish
this?

Thanks,

If you only have one gc you have already answered your own problem. Define
a gc on at least 1 more dc, otherwise users can't authenticate if the only
gc is down. The gc is what is used to get users authenticated.

Fix any other problems you might have. Don't rebuild.

Thanks, I have added a global catalog server in the LAN
and placed on on the WAN in a remote location. I have
also moved all FSMO roles to a better more powerfull
server. Everything seems to be working in a test of
turning off the server.

I still need to take this server down and either replace
it of re-work it from top to bottom.

I think now it becomes more of an Exchange question than
AD. What should I do to keep Exchange functioning while
the "true" exchange server is out of service?

I will also place this question in the Exchange group.
