Using XP home SP3

is there a way to remove an account marked as a private account?

Have an account no longer with company, but need to access his folders.

Thx

It's unclear what you mean by "private account", there is really no such
thing in Windows XP. Perhaps you mean that the user marked his files
and folders as "Private Files", this is merely an NTFS permissions
setting, as an Administrator you should be able to simply take ownership
and control of the files as any other files on the disk.

thanks - that is what I meant.

The only problem is, I can not get i to his user account, because I do not
have the password.

I need his files and do not want to delete the user or folders.

You do not need to "get into his account" which I understand as meaning
"login to his account" to copy files to wherever you wish.
You just find the folders that you wish to copy.
Then using an account which is a member of the administrators group, set the
permissions on the files in those folders to allow this account full access.
Finally, you copy the files to another folder.

Even with the Administrator's account, I canot get access to the folders?

You will be able to once you take ownership, but if the files are also
encrypted you will need the account password and log into the account to
decrypt them - that's the way EFS works.

However, if you make almost any changes to the account credentials from
outside it - such as resetting the password from the Admin account - it's
almost guaranteed that you will permanently lose decrypt access to them.
And that probably won't enhance your reputation with your employer.

If this is remotely a concern to you, remove the diske, clone it, work with
the clone, and leave the original aside until you are certain that you have
the files you need. It won't take you long to find out what you need to
know.

Thanks Patrick

That sounds like my problem - encrypted files/

I'll have to try and get the password, if they are willing to give it to me
(no longer with company!)

You can identify encrypted files by attribute or colour:

.... .but to see those colour difrerences, you still have to get into the
account, and you have to have the password to do that.

If it's XP Pro, if you need to reset the passwords, if there is any hint of
encryption, if the data is of any value, do it on a cloned copy of the disk.
