I so hope someone can help! I installed a program to download music a
while back, then I thought I deleted it, but it did not go away. It
moved under wraps. I tried to reinstall the prgm but... argh! I can
not use it nor can I get rid of it. It is seemingly untouchable. It
can not be removed by conventional methods. I forget the commands I
have used to TRY to get rid of it, it has been a while. I am ready to
reformat my FD at this point! Any help out there? Any one else done
this and fixed it without a recover or reformat? Any tried and true
suggestions? Thanks

And the name of the program is.... (Drum roll)

And if you don't know the name of the program, then how do you
expect to remove it ? :-)

Some of the malware sites have instructions for removing
"rogue software", and the name of this program might appear
on one of those sites. Maybe it wasn't a music download program
in the first place, but instead is a piece of malware. Malware
doesn't delete easily.

*******

You can delete anything you want on a computer. Even the pagefile
or hiberfile can be deleted. Boot a Linux LiveCD for example,
and you can tear your OS apart. All the files can be deleted then.
An example is a Ubuntu CD, free for download. But I doubt, armed
with this knowledge, anything good will come of it. It's so easy
to b0rk your OS by deleting stuff, you're more likely to trash the
computer, than succeed at deleting the program.

They have that Add/Remove panel for a reason - it's the only
sane way to be removing software. Any other way, takes to
much skills and knowledge.

I hate to suggest it, but there are tools like this.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revo_Uninstaller

Why do I hate to suggest that ? Because everyone latches onto the
notion of things like that being a "hammer", and you can hammer
the shit out of stuff. Again, tools like that are a plus/minus.
You can remove stuff, or you can trash your computer. There is
no guarantee your computer will work exactly the same after using
stuff like that.

I recommend backing up the C: drive, before you attempt to do stuff
like that. Then, if you break something, a restore from backup
can put it all back. Or, you can take your chances, don't back
up anything, and if you break it, reinstall Windows.

Good luck,
Paul

Live and learn.

First you'll need a program monitor preferably with a program
deleter. Uhm...Revo Uninstaller in "hunter" mode. If it's easy or
partially uninstalled you can actually reinstall it (in hunter mode)

2nd you simply uninstall unwanted programs

3rd goto work if it's malware to find damage done. Files/directories
(registry entries), that won't delete I've had to get at from a boot
arbitrator (another OS - 98SE command prompt and another prg to get at
the OS with the offending files. There are also a few far and between
utilities -hacker grade- capable of unlocking nasty system protection
locks used by such files attempting to hone their hooks on you).

4th Watch for nasty scripts, cookies and crap in your browser when
those unwanted programs want to get into the "take charge" scheme of
things.

Forget everything above if you know how to do binary partition backups
(requires a boot arbitrator). You'll know a lot, because it's not
necessary easy if you're good at or exacting about it. Although,
somewhat typical of getting back what you invest in learning. I do it
all the time, sort of like you're proposing when formatting your HD --
except it takes me precisely 1m:52sec to restore or rewrite my active
operating system partition with the last good OS prior to any
connection to the internet -- and, btw, I keep more than one "OS
backups" sequentially dating back. Last - say your prayers or at least
irreligiously knock on wood for people who have been through it.
They're a good thing at times to run into.

I'm not too keen on radio programs (?), btw, and only use one
*tentatively* (upon occasion and with some watchfulness) --
AIMPPortable. Another - well rated for whatever that's worth was
trying to use my system as a server source for broadcasting and was
prone to nasty, nasty crashes (which *could* also be an interaction
between complex program systems, say, 20 or more outside program
residuals, stubs, or threads running concurrently).
