In the WIN2K/WIN2K3 environment (are you using WIN2K?) the
is no difference between domain controllers, because ALL
domain controllers are PEER.
To remove the domain controller from the forest the steps
are:
1) Verify that, at least, one additional GLOBAL CATALOG
server is present in your domain. This is very important.
If there are no additional GC server you MUST select the
appropriate flag in Active Diretory Sites and Services for
another server;
2) Once you are sure that another GLOBAL CATALOG server is
present in your domain, logon to the server you want to
remove from domain controllers and type:
START > Run > dcpromo (followed by RETURN)
The Active Directory Setup Wizard will start.
The window message will inform you that the procedure will
remove the domain controller from the Active Directory.
At this point, another message will inform you that if the
server is a GLOBAL CATALOG server, it will be necessary to
have, at least, one another GLOBAL CATALOG in the Domain.
In addition to this, I suggest you to have another GLOBAL
CATALOG in the site where the domain controller you are
going to remove is located.
If all the conditions are met, then select "OK" and follow
the instructions (very simple); in a few minutes your
server will become a "MEMBER SERVER" only, and it will be
removed from the list of the Domain Controller.
