Removable hard drive with locking mechanism without key?

I am looking for a removable hard drive caddy and tray that has some
sort of mechanism that locks the drive caddy in the tray so that it
can't be removed during disk access.

I know that many of the available removable drive caddy and trays have
keys that lock them in place but I don't want a key because I don't
want to get in a situation where the user loses the key. I don't need
to lock the drive for security reasons but I do need to insure that
the drive doesn't get removed during disk access. It would be really
good if this locking mechanism was software controlled.

Anybody know of any manufacturers that build this type of mechanism?

Thanks,

No. The problem is that there is no locking command for fixed ATA/SCSI
disks. That means the manufacturer would need to use a bridge that
understands the SCSI/ATA removable disk commands and does the locking.
This would be very expensive and there is likely no maket for it.

I setup a friends office network and for his backup he is using removable
IDE drives in caddies like you mention. I too was worried about his
secretary losing the key for the disk caddy. What I did was take a big long
stretchy keychain and screwed it to the bottom of the countertop over the
backup machine. There is no way for the secretary to lose the key because
its tied down!

The backup is working flawlessly, if anybody has questions, I am certainly
willing to answer.

Works for me,

That seems like a very good solution!
