I have set up remote login, but when I tried it from my parents pc it did not
work. Can anyone clarify what should be entered on the login window? I have
put a copy of the window I mean on -

I've given the relevent areas a number. Could you confirm what goes in
which area?

Many thanks!

Use the public IP of your PC at home, ie. the IP assigned by your ISP. If
the PC is behind a firewall you need to open TCP Port 3389 on the firewall.

Use your UserId and password. Also note you need to be an administrator or a
member of the Remote Desktop Users Group.

Leave the domain blank in your case.

I forgot to add the UserId and password are local to your home PC, ie. the
PC you want to remotely access/control.

So would i be right in saying that the pc name is not relevant and doesn't
need to be used in order to log in to it?

So if i am calling the ip address of the router (with the correct port open)
using the dialogue window i posted at the beginning of this thread, how do i
get to the pc so i can log on?

You need to forward TCP Port 3389 through the router to the "static" private
LAN IP of the PC you want to remotely access/control with Remote Desktop...

I've tried to set this up as well and am unable to connect outside my
network. I forwarded the port just like I have done for bit torrent
and it should work. I did a port scan and it said that 3389 was open,
so I figure it should work, but I still can't connect over the
Internet, even from a machine on the network...

Well, if you can't connect over your local LAN you need to look closely at
personal firewall software or anti-trojan software or something like OneCare
Live or an addressing issue or etc...etc...etc that may be blocking incoming
RDP requests. Have you worked through the troubleshooting section?

Over the LAN it works fine, but I can't connect over the Internet. I
will look at that tutorial more closely when I am with the machine, but
it seemed to work great before when I port forwarded for bit torrent.
I no longer have a software firewall on the machine, so there should be
no problem...

Make sure that when you test through the router from another PC that your at
a remote site. Its not valid to call the routers public IP address from
another PC on the same local network...

I've tried it on the LAN - that works
I've tried it at a remote computer - doesn't work

All the tools say that port is open, so everything should be fine...I
don't get it

Are you using the correct IP address to call from the remote location?

What type of internet connection do you have at home, ie. DSL or Cable?

What router, ie. manufacturer and model?

Is this failing from one remote site, ie. at work for example, or all remote
sites, ie. family/friends house for example. If its the former then its
possible your work network admins are blocking TCP Port 3389 traffic
outbound from the work network.

I'm using the correct IP, I have Cable with a Buffalo Airstation router
- not sure the model number, it's not in front of me.

It does fail from work and I haven't tried any other places yet, but my
coworker (in the same space) uses remote connection to connect to his
home computer and it works great for him.

I'll include more details when I can look at the router.

Thanks
