Hi - we are trying to set up a guestbook as a kind of
message board and it all works fine except the remote user
name is blank so we can't realy identify who has posted
them entry.

We do have the remote machine IP address so we can track
down people who post abusive things o nthere but this
isn't very user friendly for people who are just reading
the comments. Any ideas as to why the remote name is
blank?

Cheers

Cath

Cath,
Often the remote username is only populated for the web server when
a user has authenticated (like when logging on to a secure site through a
windows logon box).

Hope this helps,

I was having the same problem with people posting abusive
things in my guestbook (random people with nothing better
to do) so I set up my guestbook to email all posts to me
instead of instantly posting them. I made a redirect page
that let the user know that their posts would be posted to
the guestlog within 24 hours after being approved by me.

Then I set up a back door page where I would re-enter
legitimate posts and have that page send the results to
the actual guestlog.

Not long after I did that, all the abusive posts starting
fading off and now I only receive legitimate posts. Once
you take the fun out of being able to abuse a guestbook,
the abusers (losers) simply stop.

Just a suggestion and I hope this helps.
