Is it possible to remote using xp's remote connection to a laptop using a
netgear wireless setup?

Sure if the remote computer is XP pro. What you may need to do is open the port 3389.

I have pro but the remote is home. I thought that as long as the originator
had pro it didn't matter what they have.

No, to access a XP Home machine you need to use a third-party application
like VNC (any flavor) or LogMeIn or etc. Remote Desktop can only run in
"host mode" on an XP Pro box. Personally I recommend UltraVNC with its
encryption plug-in, chat functionality, file transfer functionality, etc if
you want to remotely control and access a XP Home machine.

If the XP Home machine is behind a firewall/router you also need to
open/forward TCP Port 5900 and call using the public IP of the
firewall/router...
