Hi,

I am wondering if there is a way to have a scanner connected to the
server and have all the regular computers scan from there.

I know people have asked this before, but maybe now some software has
come out that would work.

Also maybe xp has some feature that can do it

I have the officejet 7310 from hp

Any help would be great

Zach,
I have the OfficeJet 7310 installed on ethernet behind a NAT
router. It works fine on Win XP Pro as long as the user has
Administrative rights. Any limited user seems to have trouble with the
scanner portion of it except when using a web browser interface. The
rest of the printer functions such as fax and printing work fine
regardless of user privileges.

It seems to be a problem with HP software for this multifunction in the
scanner area requiring Admin rights. HP tech support which is based
mostly in India was no help at all. Their blowoff was it works here so
it's your problem.

Perhaps if you have the desire, you could pursue trying with HP. If you
have luck, please post here.

Also, HP 7310 software and drivers do not support Win95 at all.

I am wondering if there is a way to have a scanner connected to
[computer N] and have all the other computers scan from there.

This is ... less optimal than you may think. If you're at computer M,
and there's a scanner at computer N, you have to walk over to computer N
and put the original on the scanner. Then you have to walk back to
computer M and do your scanning. Then you have to walk to computer N
and get your original back. You'd have fewer trips if you just took the
original over to computer N and scanned the thing locally.
maybe now some software has come out that would work.

This has existed for many years, under the names "TightVNC" and "X11".
Keep in mind that these are *general* solutions for the problem of
running a GUI app (or entire desktop environment) on machine N while
that app or environment displays on machine M and receives input from
machine M.
