After recently formatting HD and re-installing XP Home a
dialogue box frequently appears advising that the
computer will shut down in 30secs. The advice given is
NTauthority/System---Remote procedure call. This is
becoming increasingly frustrating. Can anyone help solve
the problem. PLEASE.

Your computer is infected with a virus (worm) called Blaster.
Go here to read about it (have you been under a rock for the last month???)

Have you ran a virus scan? I had this same problem and
it quit when I went to the Symantec website and d/l
FixBlast.exe and ran it.

Good Luck!

Mentioned hundreds of times in this group. Search for "RPC" or "remote",
to see some of those replies and pointers.

Also search http://google.com for "Blaster", which is the worm that has
invaded your PC.
Kelly and Doug's links, below, also have prevention and clean up tools.

Greetings --

If you connected the PC to the Internet without having first
installed the KB824146 Hotfix, without having first installed an
antivirus application with current virus definition files, and before
enabling a firewall, you're very likely to get infected from any of
the thousands of PCs on the Internet that are constantly broadcasting
the Blaster and/or Welchia worms.
