Is it possible to run a "shut down" command from my XP pro
admin to a '98SE box on my network?

Seems like you should be able to. How?
thanks

use the shutdown command
shutdown -i for GUI interface
but i am not sure if it work on win98

If I browse for the computer it says "Directoy Service not
Available". If I type the direct address the GUI hangs.
Do I need to activate "Directory Service" on the '98 box or
on both to make the GUI work?
I am unfamiliar with this function.

thanks anyway Jonathan.
I'm trying to avoid hooking up a monitor & key board just
to turn it off. I was hoping for a quick fix before doing
my 98SE research.

Kurt,

I just checked, only to find that PsShutdown from
www.sysinternals.com also works only on NT/2000/XP, not on 98SE.

Sorry, no solution. At least I spared you one dead-end street.

You might run VNC or NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing (RDS) and shutdown the remote PC while
connected.

Note the VNC data stream is *NOT* encrypted like the RDS data stream is. That is a potential
security problem over the public internet. Some folks run VNC through VPN or SSH tunnels to work
around that issue. On a private LAN that is not a big deal or shouldn't be...
