Remote observation of classroom computers

I have a middle school computer classroom with 18 new student desktops and one new teacher desktop. It is difficult to keep all students on task all the time. Is there a way to set up the student computers within XP Professional so I can selectively monitor any student screen at any time? Can I also set it up to write real-time messages to any or all student screens? All classroom computers are networked through a school server? Thank you very much.

Yes, it is possible. The MS-only solution is to "shadow" the
connection.. However, this requires either a server based computer or
a spare windows XP machine to work. See
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=279656 for more information.
However, the student WILL notice this happening.

The other option is to use software like VNC
(http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net) to remotely monitor and/or control
systems.

There's a low-tech solution for this one, as well.

I recall an elementary school setting where the computers were arranged in
circular desks with a space in the middle where all the wiring, etc, was
done. I thought it was quite neat, but the next time I returned, it had all
been rearranged in neat rectangular rows. (this was a dedicated computer
lab classroom)

I asked the teacher about it, and he said that he'd found that the circular
arrangement just didn't work well in terms of his being able to see what the
kids were doing--both in the positive and the negative sense. With the
straight rows, he could stand behind them and get some view of whether they
were following along successfully, or at least see what was up on each
machine.

When I was in school back quite a few years ago, we had the computer
lined up along the walls in the same type of layout you discuss...
Granted at the time, they were only Apple II's... But then Oregon
Trail got to be pretty distracting... :)
