I am trying to connect 2 pc's via a dialup connection.
Creating a peer to peer network. When I dial into the
remote pc the remote pc's modem answers but I cannot get
any further. It does not connect and and ask for a
password. Is there some setting I am missing?

Thanks

Have you created an "Incoming Connections" on the remote PC and enabled it
for the modem?

Yes I have. The modem answers but then just continues to
make the usual modem noise until it eventually times out.

To my understanding if the incoming connection was not
setup it would not answer the call at all.

The two computers do not seem to be able to communicate
eventhrough the dialup connection is there.

What I cannot understand is it does not give an error
which would help to solve the problem.

So you followed these steps?

*************************

Configure RAS on Windows XP

Configure the desktop computer for incoming connections

1. Click Start, and then Control Panel.
2. Click the Network and Internet Connections icon and pick the Network Connections icon.
3. Double-click Make New Connection for the New Connection Wizard.
4. Select Advanced Connection under Network Connection Type and click Next.
5. Select Accept incoming connections and click Next.
6. Select the modem from the list of devices, and click Next.
7. Select either of the options for allowing Virtual Private Connections, and click Next.
8. Check the users you want to be able to authenticate when connecting to the desktop from the
device, and click Next.
9. Ensure the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) check box is selected, click Next, and then Finish.

Call the phone number of the modem the PC is connected to from the remote PC...

Make sure your modem is setup for Auto Answer...

If the modem just continues to make noise, it sounds like the handshaking
process between the analog modems may not be completing. This is pretty low
level--I'm not sure what, if anything, would make it up to the higher-level
logs, even if you had all the logging settings on.

Thoughts, which may not be very useful, are to look for a newer driver for a
modem--particularly a Winmodem--or try an alternate modem, if possible.
That's if you've been through Al's list first, of course!

I've been trying to make two Win XP Pro workstations see each other via
modems, just like Anonymous in "Remote network problem" sent on 9/22/2004.

One has been set to dial and the other to recieve incoming connections and
they do seem to do that.

On the dialing machine View Network Connections reports "Connected "
On the recieving computer View Network connection reports "Connected"
The dialing computer has even been correctly assigned a suitable IP address.

I can't see what to do next, neither machine, nor any shared disk appears in
the other's workgroup or network places, so please, what hugely obvious step
am I missing.
