Michelle

Please can someone help me, I've recently joined a
company who's ex IT manager was ex MOD, and he's set a
very strict security policy on the network.
I'm not complaining but none of his settings have been
documented and I'm trying to set up performance monitors
on our servers (All Win2K) and I'm continually recieving
messages telling me I can't connect to the Server.

I'm a Domain Admin, so I know it's not that, but I am
aware that there are certain permission that can be
changed on specific files (and in the reg) to prevent
remote performance monitoring. Could anyone please help
and let me know what those files are? I've searched the
KB and not had much joy.

Any help would be greatly apprciated.

Many Thanks
Michelle

Make sure the remote registry service is running on those computers. --- Steve

Steven, Thanks for the input, I've tried that but I am
still not able to view the performance data on remote
servers.

Any other ideas?

I don't know specific things to look at offhand, but you might consider
running Security Configuration and Analysys mmc snapin on one of those
computers against the setup security.inf template to see if you can spot
likely changes that may cause this to happen. Another thing to try is to put
one of the servers in it's own OU with that template or the dcsecurity.inf
template imported into a GPO for that OU to see if it allows you access.

If the security configuration changes were done locally, resetting security
settings to default defined levels as described in the KB link below may
help. Using gpresult is always helpful in telling what GPO's are being
applied to a computer so that you can investigate them further to see if you
can find where changes are implemented. If you have or can put an XP SP1
domain member in the domain you can use Group Policy Management Console from
it to manage Group Policy for a W2K domain which will make it much easier
for you to track down what is going on. --- Steve
