am having problems running gpedit for a remote PC...i have a stand alone
machine (not connected to our domain) and have it locked down with Local
Policies, with auto logon (as a standard user) enabled. Problem is, I
cannot override autologn, and get in as admin....tried holding shift on
logoff and logon, but pc still boots up with autologon settings...

running gpedit.msc /gpcomputer: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (xxx is my remote
computers IP) and keep getting access denied errors....

both machines running xp sp1

any suggestions would be appreciated...
thanks

Problem is that the username you are using does not have rights to that PC. If you are simply trying to get around the group policy, you can just connect the hard drive of the locked computer to another working computer or if you have access to the C drive over share, then Move or Delete the "C:\windows\system32\GroupPolicy" folder. This will remove all local group policies and you will have full access to the computer again.

OMG! - At last a reply!!

PLEASE HELP ME!! I'm TRAPPED IN MY OFFICE

I've been locked in here for FOUR YEARS!

I couldn't figure out how to edit group policy remotely and threw my keys at the wall in anger... Annoyingly, they flew straight out of an open window.

PLEASE COME AND RESCUE ME!!

*Also, I've just tried deleting the remote group policy folder, but I'm still getting access denied errors - can you bring service pack 2 with you please.

Same issue

I just wanted to say that I had the exact same issue but I was finally able to find a solution.

It was a convoluted process to correct it, but I finally found the solution on a combination of obscure websites that I'm sure nobody else will stumble upon. Rather than being helpful I will just say something like "Oh, hey, don't worry, I figured it out." without providing a solution.

I hope someone eventually found your body at some point over the last 3 years.

Signed - a useless troll.

2012, time to keep this alive and prepare this thread as it nearly makes it to a decade old!

By now I would hope that you've replaced your Windows XP computer with Windows 7, but if you're still getting a rights error I might recommend doing this from the command prompt:

CACLS C:\Windows\System32\GroupPolicy /e /g Users:F
