I want to remote access a pc using XP and understand that
I need Pro on this pc. Can I upgrade from XP to Pro
without losing any data, applications or settings; and do
I have to pay the full upgrade price?

If you wait until the end of the month, then yes you can
get remote. contrary to what someone said, it wont be a
requirement to have XP Pro to logon remotely. The reason
for this is simply that XPSP2 will be coming out and it
has a remote services client enabling you to login from
another machine. And that naturally also means that your
files will not be deleted because there wont be any
repartitioning of the hard disk.

Yes, you need XP Pro running on the PC your trying to connect to if you want to use Remote Desktop.
XP Home can not act as a Remote Desktop host. You can purchase the XP Pro Upgrade edition, which is
less expensive than the XP Pro Full version.

A less expensive alternative, ie. FREE, is to use UltraVNC with its encryption plug-in. UltraVNC
runs on a variety of OS platforms and is quite easy to use.

That is *NOT* correct. XP SP2 is a major update for security and networking issues. SP2 does *NOT*
magically make a XP Home machine like a XP Pro machine in that you can use Remote Desktop in a host
mode on the XP Home machine.
