can Windows XP Home Edition be set up for remote desktop control, and is its
purpose that I can access my desktop computer in the office from my laptop in
the field?

How do I set up such a configuration?

Windows XP Home has no native Remote Desktop capabilities.
UltraVNC or TightVNC could be a solution.
Of course - do you understand all the other necessities?
Firewall configuration, port forwarding through any NAT/router devices?
