Remote Desktop Won't Connect

Is there a default setting in Windows XP Home that would
cause Remote Desktop not to work. Maybe some firewall?

We recently ordered 3 new laptops from HP and all 3 will
work on the Internet but will not connect to Remote
Desktop.

Remote Desktop works for all the rest of our machines so
it is not our server that is the problem. We have
unlimited connections so that is not an issue either.

Thanks,

KaDe

If you are trying to connect to the laptops it will not work as RD is not an
option on XP Home. If you are trying to connect from the laptops to XP Pro
or a server with RD it should work.

Did HP perhaps include some kind off firewall the is causing the problem?

TCP port 3389 must be open on your firewall.

We have a Windows Server in our main office that all of
our people connect to. Everyone else can connect but
these laptops cannot.

I think you are right, it is also my opinion that the
Windows XP has some kind of firewall that is enabled by
default that is blocking the remote desktop. The Internet
works fine on these systems, it is only remote desktop
that does not work.

Where would I look to disable a firewall? I've looked
through the obvious places (programs, control panel,
etc...) but I can't find anything. I'm not sure where to
even find the Microsoft firewall - ICF.

My boss sat on the phone with HP technical support for 90
minutes and they didn't have a clue. He had to tell the
guy what Remote Desktop was.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Marc,

I went to the Advanced Settings on the Internet
Connection dialog box. Checked on the "Protect my
computer...etc." box and then clicked settings and
checked Remote Desktop.

Is this the firewall setting?

This did not work.

If I am doing something wrong or if there is something
else I have to do I would appreciate your help.

Is this some kind of new setting that is delivered with a
standard OEM configuration of Windows XP? We haven't had
this problem with laptops until recently, we thought it
was a bad laptop from Toshiba and sent the laptop back
because it wouldn't work. We got the HP's and have the
same problem.

That's the Internet Connection Firewall.

Because this firewall regulates inbound traffic only, it shouldn't be
affecting your use of the Remote Desktop Connection client software on these
machines to talk to the server--that's outbound traffic.

Are there any "protection" suites from Norton or McAfee or the like provided
by HP on these machines?

There is no virus software installed or running on these
systems. Is there some setting within Admin Tools-
Services or Component Services that needs to be set
differently?

I have also tried installing remote desktop client on the
systems even though it comes with windows and still cannot
logon to the server with these three new machines.

What happens if you telnet to port 3389 from a "bad" machine?

Compare it to a "good" machine so you can see whether there's a difference.
