Remote Desktop with a Public IP address

Hi,
I am attempting to set up a telecommuting solution with
windows xp pro remote desktop. I am using a satellite
internet provider on the client end, and I've found that
remote desktop through VPN is too slow (due to satellite
latency periods involved with VPN) to be sufficient for
my situation. I thought perhaps that I could bypass the
slow VPN connection by using the remote desktop with a
public IP address. Unfortunately, I have not been
successful connecting to my server this way. I get the
error message "Failure to connect to the web server". Any
help in solving my dilema would be greatly appreciated.

The VPN isn't required, but I'm not sure that you will see enough speed
increase to help.

You'll need to open port 3389, TCP in any firewall or router at the host
end, and forward incoming traffic on that port to the destination machine.

Is there a reason you are using the web connection method? Using the
executable would be simpler, although speed should be the same.
 
Oops--If, in fact, you are using the web connect method, you need to be
forwarding port 80, TCP to the webserver, as well.
 
If your using DIRECTWAY your issue is simple, VPN might
work as well as a 56K modem, if it works at all...
