Remote Desktop -> VPN Authentication Fails

I have an interesting request from a friend. He wants to use a
laptop, then remote desktop to his workstation and then try to VPN
into his company. This is using a Cisco VPN Client software. He gets
a "User Authentication Fails" error all the time. But if he logs on
locally to his workstation and runs the VPN Client, it works fine. Is
there a reason why running the VPN Client remotely is not working?
Any ideas?

This scenario works fine with Microsoft VPN Client. What is the VPN error
you get when the VPN connection is tried over remote desktop? Any events in
the event log of interest?
