I recently updated my computer with windows update. Ever since, my files in "My Documents" are locked when I did not ask for them to be protected. More to the point though is that I can no longer access my machine remotely. I am running XP Pro and the enable this machine to be connected to button is ticked in the properties. This only happened when I updated my computer two weeks ago.

If anyone can help with thies issue I would be very grateful. I need to access my machine from work and my documents are locked even when I log onto my machine via a \\... So I can see everything bar my personal Documents and Settings.

Thanks for the help.

In short

1) Since updating Remote desktop says my machine cannot be connected

2)My documents have been made private without my knowledge and how do I remove it?

Can you spot what update it was that had this effect?

Can you right-click your My Documents folder, and choose Properties.

Is there a Security tab?

If not, you may need to go to Explorer, Tools, Folder options, View tab,
scroll to the end of Advanced settings, and uncheck "use simple file
sharing"

Once you have a security tab, can you go to advanced, owner tab, and take
ownership of the folder and all files and subfolders?

I hesitate to suggest this--it sounds as though perhaps the user profile is
corrupt, and I worry about making things worse--but you should be able to
get access to your files.

So--maybe the machine doesnt recognize you as an administrator--and thus
able to use RD?

What do you see in Control panel, users accounts, for your account? are you
"computer administrator"?

I tried to find the update but to no avail. It would seem I am not the only one having problems connecting to my computer. The permissions are all fine. I can access my files on my machine and I am set to administrator. Its just weird that my computer rejects my connection using remote desktop.

Thanks for the suggestions Bill.
