Hi, need some help connecting to 2 different computers here, I'll cut to the chase.

Computer 1:

- the connect FROM computer is a Sympatico (Canada) DSL connection behind a router, didn't mess with the router settings, tried with ZoneAlarm off, tried with XP Firewall off

- the connect TO computer is a CABLE connection, no router, kinda weird though because it uses this adaptor (CATC NetMate Link) that connects from the cable modem to the PC via USB (no ethernet card?), turned on Remote Assistance and Remote Desktop (in Control Panel/System), tried with ZoneAlarm off, allowed port 3389 (Remote Desktop) for XP firewall, found real ip address using "www.showmyip.com"

When my dad tried connecting at the FROM computer (I'm sitting at the remote PC) before we turned off ZoneAlarm it would give the "The client could not connect..." error BUT now that ZoneAlarm is off it just hangs there for a few minutes until we lose patience, nothing happens at the remote end. Any ideas? Could it be the USB network thing?

Computer 2:

This time I have the same FROM computer behind a router, and the TO PC is right next to it using the SAME router. Is it possible to use RDC between these two and is there anything I need to know before I try? Also, I simply set up these two computers to be on the same "workgroup" MSHOME, shouldn't these computers be able to see each other in My Network Connections, I'm trying to set up a home network and these two computers are not acknowledging each other.

Thanks in advance for any advice or ideas!

I can answer the 2nd question - yes... Use the private IP address of
the computer to connect to it (available by running ipconfig from a
command prompt).

Also try turning ZoneAlarm off, reboot, then retry the connection...

Figured out the second problem (after formatting and reinstalling windows!) had to mess with the Local Network Security stuff in Administative Tools... Still can't get the first setup to work though, if anyone can help..?

Hi. Yes I completely uninstalled it this time. I still can't login to the remote PC, I've allowed network connection in Local Security, disabled XP firewall, enabled RDC in Control Panel, what else could it be? Thanks for your help.
