When connecting to my work computer from home the
response on the remote desktop might be OK for a few
clicks but soon slows to a crawl. If I right click I'll
get an immediate response, i.e. it seems to clear
whatever is hold it up. So I don't think it's a
communication problem. Something on the remote computer
seems to be holding up the response.

TIA,
Robb

Boy do I feel neglected! I can't believe I didn't get
any response here.

At any rate, I didn't find the reason for this problem
but I did find a workaround. It seems to happen after I
have previously used remote desktop and then come back
later. It looks like some kind of message queue that
handles mouse clicks is getting backed up this causes the
slow response.

I found that if I reset the remote system and then log on
again the problem goes away. XP remote desktop won't
normally let you reset the remote system, but you can use
"shutdown -r" at the command prompt. The system will
then shutdown and restart.

If anyone's found a better solution I'd love to hear
about it.

Hi Robb,

Can you describe the slowness that you had been experiencing? I didn't see
your previous post, but this sounds unusual. If you continue to see this
slowness, it might be worth trying running 'logoff' as opposed to a complete
restart, which would be a fair bit faster and would reset your remote
session.

Robb,
I am having the same behavior as you. I posted some details in another
message and probably will create another thread on this slowness issue in
the next day or two. I encourage you to post some details of your
configuration/situation. My officemate and I both have similar behavior
with some different hardware. We are looking to eliminate factors and
hopefully obtain a solution. It's strange that there seems to be several
threads on the problem but no solution that I have found yet!
Regarding restart, I too find that booting the remote system clears up
the problem for some days (maybe about a week). You can obtain the remote
system Windows security dialog with CTRL-ALT-END or use the XP desktop (as
opposed to the classic desktop) which displays the Windows Security option
on the start menu. As you found, shutdown -r also works.
At one time we thought the classic desktop had something to do with the
slowness issue but we now have some evidence that it is not related.

Hi guys,
We too have the slowness problem mentioned bellow.
Several people confirmed this from our IT department.
As far as I am concerned, the remote computer start to be
very slow after 5-6 days.
login off from windows security was not fixing the
problem. The only way out is to issue a shutdown -r from
the controler pc.
Windows XP pro, Nortel VPN and cable access.

I also use RD to connect to a windows 2003 server. Here,
everything is fine, I did not encounter the slowness
problem yet, after 3 months of daily use.

i tried to open a nested session from this server, but
this yield the exact same problem.

Looking forward to see if there is a fix.

I'm thinking that there may be an application you are running that
could be having a slow memory leak. This would also cause the
behavior you are witnessing...

I am able to use a RD session on a Windows XP machine at about the
same speed from 1 to 20 days after a reboot.
