Remote desktop server or client with SP2

Hi,

Since I installed WinXP SP2 on my server, I get timeouts when trying to
connect from remote locations.

To test, I tried removing SP2 from my server, and the Remote Desktop
function was restored like it was working before (i.e. correctly). However,
now my IIS service won't work adequately. It seems to go "offline" after a
few hours (I event reinstalled the server with sp2 just to make sure). No
more web site!!!

So I am asking the following question: has anyone experienced problem with
Remote Desktop Service (client or server) since installing XP SP2?

As for myself, as much as I hate it, I will have to reinstall my server,
inclusing IIS + POP3 server, Fax server, etc. etc. etc. What a waster of
time, for something that was working perfectly withour sp2. Like they say,
don't fix it if it ain't broken...

Well, WinXP isn't a server OS, so I presume you mean you have a workstation
acting as a "server" in a peer to peer network.

It seems very likely that something was indeed broken but you didn't know
it. Did you follow the pre-SP2 installation checklist? Is all your software,
and are all your drivers, SP2 compatible? SP2 is a very good thing and can
often be installed with no problems at all - usual problems are incompatible
software, hardware, or underlying errors in the existing installation (often
due to spyware).

The big change with SP2 was the introduction of a firewall: did you
configure the firewall to permit the incoming calls that you are trying to
make?

Thanks for the response. And yes, to respond to the two threads, My machine
was fully qualified to have SP2 installed in it.

And I am not using Microsoft firewall, in fact, I have even disable Security
Center and Microsoft firewall directly at service level. This machine is an
Internet server running on XP Pro. And it contains no spyware and no viruses
(I am an IT specialist myself).

So I did like every other specialist when something goes wrong: reinstall! I
deinstalled a few days ago SP2 and remote desktop started to work fully again
(in fact, event with SP2, it was working from within my own internal network.
Timeout occured only from distant machines (external to my network, such as
my laptop). But then, IIS started showing signs of trouble. It would not
respond after 10 hours of operations.

So, last night, I reinstalled SP2 again, and guess what: the thing is
working correctly this morning. And to be more bizarre, this was a fresh
installation from last week (I reformated the server because of this problem,
and after complete installation, I still had the same problem). So,
deinstalling SP2 and reinstalling after fixed it. Another mystery... Maybe it
has something to do with the security patches that were installed AFTER SP2
but that were untouched during the uninstall/reinstall of SP2. I may never
know my answer...

I observed a similar behaviour after installing SP2: Remote Desktop
ain't working any more.

Do you conect via RAS dial in or on a local intranet?

If the first case, try to get connection properties after dial-in
connect. The mentioned server-address may vary from the server's "real"
ip-address. Establish remote desktop to the announced ip, not the "real" ip.

That worked for me, at least.
