Im new to XP Pro and wondering how safe the remote
desktop really is? Im afraid of being Hacked, And is my
router and firewall going to be a problem? Thanks for the
help.

Scott,
My experience with remote desktop (with XP Pro & Home, as
well as Win98) has been very positive, meaning it was
fairly simple to configure and allowed me to maintian
security using software firewall and hardware firewall
(router).

I've set up remote access into an XP Pro box on a 5-system
LAN, accessible remotely from both an XP Home machine and
a Win98SE box. Remote access operates over TCP port 3389,
which most common software firewalls allow you to open (I
use Trend Micro's PC-Cillin). Recently, I've attached D-
Link 604 routers to all end points with no problems.
Again, you need to open port 3389 on the routers. I've had
this in operation for about 4 months with no intrusion or
successful attacks due to remote access. I've kept the av
&firewall software enabled on all machines.

The LAN I support is over 3hrs from where I live, and this
remote setup has saved me much travel time!
Hope this helps.

Derek

Best way to keep secure is to:

1) Keep your computer up-to-date with security hotfixes

-and-

2) Maintain a strong username/password cominbation that can't be
easily determined by research or brute force methods.

Derek,

What PC-Cillin firewall settings are you using to allow Remote Deskto
to function? I tried adding a rule to allow TCP/IP-UDP communicatio
to and from on port 3389, but whenever I leave the firewall enabled,
can not remote connect. As soon as I disable the firewall software, n
problems connecting.
