I am trying to connect a Desktop to run through my laptop
with Remote desktop Connection. We have no router, the 2
computers are wired directly to each other. Whenever I
start up RDC, it doesn't show the desktop as an available
computer to connect to. When i enter the desktop's ip
address, it says that the desktop may not have Remote
Access Connections enabled, or there is a problem with the
network. Both Computers are running firewall. Is there a
way i can fix this to make it work?

If your running the XP ICF then look at this for help configuring the ICF for Remote Desktop.

Otherwise, if your running some other firewall software open TCP Port 3389.

The PC your trying to connect to is running XP Pro, correct?

I am running Norton Firewall, my laptop is running xp

people are saying that xp home has no remote connection,
then why is it listed under my xp home

Ok...open TCP Port 3389 in Norton on the XP Pro box. You should be able to connect if...

1. Remote Desktop is enabled on the XP Pro box.
2. Your using the correct LAN IP of the XP Pro box when calling from the laptop.
3. The firewall is *NOT* blocking TCP Port 3389.

Check the Norton documentation or their support web site for further help with that issue...

Look at page 81 of the Norton Personal Firewall 2003 for Windows XP users guide. It details how to
write rules...

http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/npf/npf_2003_info_man.html

There also may be some sort of learning mode, but I don't use the product so I can't say for sure...

Good luck...

I have exactly the same problem on XP pro with the 2004 version, and I wrote a rule that allow any communication from or to a particular host, the rule is also at the top of th e rule list, and nothing I cannot connect a. Symantec has a total absence of information on their site, and their support does not show the slightest interest in the problem. I even left a voicemail to the VP of CR, I wish they be like Cisco or MS to be honest
