WHen I use remote desktop and type in the comnputer name, remote desktop is
unable to connect to that computer. WHen I type in the computer's IP address
it is able to connect. I have tried this only within the network and not yet
via vpn connection. WHy is this happening and what can I do? I have checked
that the DNS service is up and running.

Try the networking group perhaps? It is sounding like a DHCP issue and it
MAY be (if XP is dealing with DHCP and not a router) the issue or it may be
a simple router setting that prevents inbound transfers from resolving to
the proper private IP address?
