Remote Desktop PLEASE HELP

I am trying to connect from home (which I have three wireless computers on a
router) to my one office computer which is on T1 (assuming it is on a router
because I found a IP address for it.

I keep getting the same message not being able to connect, or the host is too
busy, etc! I am actually trying to connect from one computer at home that
uses XP Professional Multi Media Edition from a computer at work that uses XP
Home Edition. I also want to be able to connect when I am at work to the
same home computer. IS THIS POSSIBLE?

I have been trying for a week to get this to work and I have read everyones
message but still can't seem to get it done. Sooner AL, I have even tried
the website that you suggested and I think it helped a little but still
doesn't work. 1. It told me to add user but it would only let me add user to
my home network wouldn't let me add outside of it. 2. I checked to see if
3389 was listening and it is at home but on the one at work it doesn't show
up. WHat do I do on that? 3. On my computer at work on the system
properties under remote I only see the remote assistance but I thought i
downloaded the updated remote desktop that was referred on the newletter
questions. Can anyone help me? PLEASE
 
In all cases the PC you want to remotely access/control with Remote Desktop
must be running XP Pro, MCE or Windows 2003 Server. If that is not the case
then you need to use an alternative method like UltraVNC for example. XP
Home can not act as a Remote Desktop host...

To use UltraVNC through a firewall/router you need to forward/open TCP Port
5900.

To connect to a PC that is behind a firewall/router with Remote Desktop you
need to forward/open TCP Port 3389.

The login user Id and password for Remote Desktop are local to the PC acting
as the Remote Desktop host. Checking to see if TCP Port 3389 is listening
must also be done on the Remote Desktop host PC.

I downloaded the ultra vnc on my work computer which is the xp home edition
but when I checked to see if 3389 was listening there was no 3389 at all.
Now what?

As noted in my first reply UltraVNC uses TCP Port 5900... You need to open
TCP Port 5900 on any firewall/router and forward that port to the PC you
want to access. Call from a remote location using the public IP of the
firewall/router. For help using UltraVNC I suggest you post to this forum,
again as I noted in my first reply...

for remote desktop you'll have to setup port forwarding on 3389!!

at the T1 connection with a firewall
allow your computer ip to map out on port 3389 and on the home computer have
3389 mapping down to your computers ip address.

also have the firewall on the home and work computer allow port 3389 come in
and go out respectivley

it sounds harder than it is described,

How do you have it map out 3389? I am new to all of this. I tried calling
the company that I bought the computers for help and they of course wanted to
charge me to walk me through it when I just bought these computers in the
last 6 months.

It definately sounds harder then described because I am lost... LOL Can
you please describe what I need to do in detail?
 
are you using windows firewall on our home computer, if so make sure on the
exceptions tab that " remote desktop is aloud", what this does is allow
remote desktop connections to be accepted by your computer on your lan,
remote desktop uses udp and tcp ports 3389

the problem now is your remote deskop is coming from another lan, this is
why we have to set up maps/pinholes/routes etc,
imagine, your at work trying to remote desktop to your home pc, the
connection is coming from you work ip address to your home t1/DSl router ip
address if we don't tell this connection what lan ip to go to it won't know
where to go.

so your going to have to play around on the admin pages on you home router,
it will under a NAT section, probably in the advanced configuration area.

how to get to the admin pages of your home router?
the best thing is to run ipconfig at the command prompt of your home pc,
take note of the gateway address
open up your internet browser
type in the gateway address#
