We have a VPN between 2 remote locations with win2k at
both locations. I have installed remote desktop on
multiple computers at both locations and still cannot
connect using the local addresses of the computers. My
intent is to remotely manage computers at the far end over
the vpn. Do I need to open a specific port on the
routers? The router configuration only allows port
forwarding to a single computer per port, so I am in a
quandery. I also have windows 2000 server at the home
location and cannot connect either to or from.

Please Help, Bill

Dear Bill,

Only Windows XP Professional and Windows 2000 Server can
be remotely controlled by the Remote Desktop software.
The Remote Desktop software is "Client" only.

With Windows 2000 Server, you need to install Terminal
Services in Remote Admin mode. Then you can remotely
control it with the software. The default port is 3389.
You can only have two remote connections at a time with
the server product, unless you purchase licenses to run
it in Application mode (you don't really want to do this
unless you want a full Terminal Server).

The other reply gives information about what machines desktops you should be
able to manage using RD.

Can you ping by IP address the machines you wish to reach by RD?

I use RD over VPN connections (in my case from a single home machine to a
corporate LAN) regularly--this should work.

What IP address do you receive for the VPN connection?

Port forwarding is not what is needed.
