Hello:

I have a problem with Remote Desktop (on a local LAN)
where an XP desktop PC can successfully start "Remote
Desktop Connection" with an XP laptop, but not the other
way around. When I start "RDC" from the laptop, it
connects, prompts for the user/password, but then displays
a blank window with a blank rectangle in the center. And
there it sits.

Each machine has an (admin) user account set up for the
remote machine to use, and they each have a password set.

The only oddity I noticed was that, the first time I
started RDC from the laptop, I had a prompt for
Windows/Microsoft Corporation to install an active-X
control (I found reference to this in the Knowledge Base).
I said "Yes", it installed with an error shortly
afterwards: "CTEaxSpl Error" with the OK button.

Thanks for your help!

.
I think I stumbled onto the solution for this. After a
little digging, I found that "CTEaxSpl" is a Creative
Labs splash screen for their Audigy audio card. Their
website's Knowledge Base had instructions for disabling
this, and that fixed my problem with the remote
computer. My impression is that unique audio and video
software can be a source of trouble for Remote Desktop.

Cheers!
