I have an XP machine that won't allow remotely connected
users to log off. Event 1073 is written to the event
log. "The attempt by user %2 to restart/shutdown
computer %1 failed" is the message from the help center.

This is true for a user or an administrator.

Ideas?

The error indicates that it is trying to reboot or shutdown, not log
off.. How are you trying to log off?

Hi Michael,

Thanks for posting!

My name is Jeff and I understand your issue to be:
Failed to log off in a remote session.

If I have misunderstood your issue please let me know.

Based on my research, I would like to confirm that if you get a warning
message like below?

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: USER32
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1073
Date: 9/24/2003
Time: 5:53:17 AM
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: DAVID
Description:
The attempt by user DAVID to restart/shutdown computer reboot failed

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
Data:
0000: 00 00 00 00 ....

If this is the exact error message, we may try the following steps:

Follow the steps below locally:

1. Run the System Configuration Utility (msconfig.exe at Start -> Run).

2. Click on the "Startup" tab and remove the checks from each item in the
Startup Items column.

3. Click on the "Services" tab and check "Hide all Microsoft Services".

4. Uncheck all the rest non-Microsoft Services.

5. Click the Apply button.

6. Reboot your computer.

Now, try to connect from a remote computer by remote desktop. Try to log
off there.

Does the problem fixed?

If that problem persists, we may need to collect the MPS report of that
machine for further research:

1. Download the MPS Reporting tool from the following website:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.EXE

2. Run the MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.EXE program. This will take quite some time to
generate
its report, but it should not impact your computer's performance greatly.

3. A CAB file will be generated in the %systemroot%\MPSReports\Setup\Cab
directory
called %COMPUTERNAME%_MPSReports_.CAB. The CAB file will contain the
reports
generated by the MPS Reporting Tool. If the CAB file isn't produced, please
compress the result files as a Zip file.

4. Send the CAB (Zip) file to Me at (e-mail address removed)

Have a nice day!

Best Regards,
