Hello,

I am having problems with Remote Assistance. When I go through the Support
and Help to try and send out an invitation, I get the following message. "A
program can not start. Please try again" This error happens when I am trying
to save the invitation as well instead of sending the invitation, which
leads me to think its not something to do with either Outlook or Messenger.
I have a XP box, fully patched, Messenger disabled due to Poligy and Outlook
Express is not installed. Instead we use Outlook. Digging further, i located
an message in the Event log stating Remote Desktop Help Session Manager
Error, Event ID 6. I can't find anything on this event ID, and I am unable
to find out further information about this. Can anybody help me further
diagnose this? Does any of the patches could have affected Remote Assitance?

Thanks in advance

Maybe related to the HelpAssistant account, can you check if this account
exists, do you have the full text in the event log.

Huei,
Here is the full event log

Description:

The Remote Desktop Help session manager did not start properly (error code

safe mode and type the following text at the command prompt:
sessmgr.exe -service. If the problem persists, contact Microsoft Product
Support.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Also, what is the HelpAssistance account? Where do I find this? All the
necessary services related to Remote Assistance including Remote Desktop
Help Session Manager are logon using local system account

I am curious how machine was setup, have RA ever work on this box?

Can you reboot into safe mode with NO networking and run
"sessmgr.exe -service" and that should solve the problem, let me know how it
goes.

You are right, Remote assistance has NEVER worked on this box. I just built
this up from scratch. If i go through safe mode and so that
sessmgr.exe -service
do i restart machine to leave safe mode. or can i try RA with safe mode box.
How does this solve the problem?

What it does is re-install this component. After you do
sessmgr.exe -service, reboot into normal and that should work, did you
install from CD or some image?

i installed from a CD, why would I need to do a re-install? I installed to
four machines, each of the four machines that I installed on, none of them
works. Each of them have the Help Assistant account disabled. As well, in
gpedit.msc, the template for remote assistance is not configured. after
configuring and enabling account it still doesn't work, trying to re-install
with safe mode now. Could any patches mess this up?

Finally solve this problem. Here are my steps,

1. Reinstalled Remote assistance via Safe Mode with "sessmgr.exe -service"
2. Renabled HelpAssistant Account
3. Two policies enabled via gpedit, local machine->admin
templates->system->remote assistance
4. Good to Go.

Thx for the help Huei, i couldn't have figured out the HelpAssistant thing
without you.

It's possible that other patch might things up but I can't tell what went
wrong, since you say that RA does not work on all 4 machines, that make me
kind of wonder why.

As for the gpedit.msc, RA is enable by default so there is no need to
configure it. HelpAssistant acocunt is managed by Remote Desktop Help
Session Manager service, so the state if this account shouldn't be the cause
of problem.
