Nick

Could someone please give me precise directions (if it's
actually possible) to allow me to control a Win98 PC via
a WinXP PC using Remote Desktop.

i.e. what do i need to install on the Win98 pc, where do
i get it, and how do i setup the Remote Desktop
Connection between the 2 PC's.

The 2 computers are on a home network connected with a
router and are part of a workgroup, not a domain.

Thanks for your help.

No, you can not use XP Pro Remote Desktop to access/control a Windows 98 box.

Look at either NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing (RDS) or UltraVNC. Both can provide an encrypted
data link to allow you to do what you want.

NetMeeting in built-in to XP and W2K and can *NOT* be upgraded. To start NetMeeting on an XP
platform go to "Start -> Run" and type conf at the command line to start the wizard. Look at this KB
article for additional help...

Please note that RDS is *NOT* compatible with XP Pro Remote Desktop.

Get the UltraVNC server/client software and encryption plug-in from...

You can use software like PC Anywhere or webbased software such as IminTouch, or Go to My PC, or Laplink etc. There is no utility built into 98 to remotely accept an invitation
