I don't know if I am in the right section here, but ....

I use Windows XP Pro and I have it set up so that I can
remote into other clients. When you remote into a
computer, it "logs off" the person currently using the
computer. I was wondering if it is possible to remote into
another computer while still allowing the person sitting
in front of the computer to see what is going on (i.e. for
instruction purposes). Now, I have set it up so that I
remote into the computer using the person's log-in
information. I don't know if this makes a difference. As
far as I can tell from the Microsoft website, only one
person can view the active console at a time. But, I
thought it wouldn't hurt to post a question. :)

May want to look at Remote Assistance a little closer. That feature does
not log off the user on the local console.

I did see this function and thought it would be useful as
well. But, does it allow you to control the computer
remotely while the "novice" watches? From what I read, it
seemed like you had to communicate via messenger or
something and it didn't seem as easy as just remoting
into the computer.

Unfortunately, this is a limitation of xp's remote desktop (to get you to buy
the server version, I assume).

Take a look at UltraVNC, which allows multiple people to connect to the
computer, and doesn't blank the local monitor (although you can set it to do
so). You can also lock the local mouse and keyboard so the person sitting at
the computer can watch what you do, but not interfere. It's freeware, open
source, and also supports encryption through a plugin system, which is great for
using it over the internet or other untrusted networks.

http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net/

I've been using it on my computer for several months now, and it works great,
with better control and faster screen updates than remote desktop, pcanywhere,
or the original VNC (now called RealVNC: http://www.realvnc.com/).

Messenger is just used for initiating the remote assistance session
(alternatively you can also initiate through email):

It sounds like remote assistance is exactly what you need, i.e. stepping a
novice through a scenario. Once the session is established control can be
switched at will between the local and remote users. Both users are able to
see the screen.
