Remote desktop connection

Can someone point me to some really clear directions as to how to connect two XP machines via the web. In the office (local LAN) they connect fine. But when I try from home with my work laptop to a second machine in my office, I get the server not available.
Is the router the IP address, or the server. I connect at home with DSL, connection at work is thru cable with router. Firewall problem?
What is the HTTP address I should use? ANY help would be appreciated. Thanks

You have to know the public ip address at work, then the router at work has
to be set to forward port 3389 (which is what remote desktop uses) to the
specific machine that you're trying to connect to. Also, the firewall at
work (if there is one) needs to be set to let that port go through. If there
are multiple users who need to connect to different computers, it gets a bit
more complicated.

If your work connection doesn't have a static IP address, you'd need to use
some sort of software that would let you connect when the IP address
changes.

It's all a bit complicated, and without knowing particulars about the setup
at work, it's hard to give any better direction.
