Hi everyone

I am trying to figour out remote desktop connection.
Say, I have a desktop (Winxp pro) at office, which is on
Lan (192.168.0.134), and this office desktop's computer
name is "Jentestpack". Then I have a desktop(winxp pro) at
home network, which sits on a Lan, it's ip address is
192.168.1.2. Both goes to internet through it's Router of
192.168.0.1(ADSL connection). Both office and home
network are workgroups, no domains.
The remote Desktop is enabled on the Office Desktop.
When I run remote desktop connection on home desktop, as
usual, it requires Host (Office desktop) name, username
and password.
But one question is, can I connect to office desktop by
just typing "Jentestpack" in the host name column? For
Jenestpack is not an offical DNS-recognized name, and
there might be thousands of computers on internet whose
names are "Jentestpack".In this case, how could the home
Desktop knows which "Jentestpack" to connect to?

Your advice will be highly appreciated
Jennifer Zhao

Since your office PC (Jentestpack) is behind a router at work, then you need to get the network
administrators to forward/open TCP Port 3389 in the router to the private LAN IP of the PC
(192.168.0.134). When calling that PC from home you would call using the public IP of the office
router, ie. the IP assigned by the ISP...

Thanks a lot for the advice.

But if there are two office PCs are enabled remote desktop
and been forwarded port 3389, then when I call one of
those two office PCs by using the public IP of office
router, which office PC will router forward call to?

It is right to say only one office PC can be remote
desktoped at a time?

Cheers,

That's also not a big problem. Look at this page for guidance. The page uses the XP ICF and a
Linksys BEFSR41 router as examples. Modify as needed for your particular situation...

An alternative would be to access one or both through a VPN tunnel...

Good luck...
