Remote Desktop Connection

Here’s my question. Is there anyway to workaround a firewall with Remote Desktop? I have an XP pro machine at my college dorm that I want to be able to access over the weekend while I’m home. The school has a firewall up. Is there anyway around this? My thinking was possible to try to run Remote Desktop on a port other than 3389. Would Remote Desktop run on a port like 80, or 8080, or some other common port that a firewall wouldn’t be blocking?

If not, is there any other free remote administration solution that would be usable in this scenario

Thanks in advance for your hel

Yes, you can change the listening port. Look at these KB articles for help with that...

i know how to change the port. my question is will it
work if i run it on port 80, 8080, 21, or some other port
that is commonly used by other applications (and as such
won't be blocked by a firewall).

It depends on what type of firewall.. If you are assigned a private
IP address, it will be virtually impossible...

the network asigns an address to each machine, but it is
not running through a proxy server. each ip address is
seen on the outside, but there is a firewall that they are
going through.

If you have no control of this firewall, you won't have luck with
incoming connections of any type...
