I tried using the RDC Client on my Vista RC1 and was disappointed to find
that I could not edit the user name as I Could in XP Pro. For some reason it
always puts the domail in front of the username. I am an IT director with
many servers, 2003 and SBS mostly. that I have set up to accept usename and
password no domain needed I need to to edit this field. and cannot in Vista
it always puts the domain/username in, this is not usable on my systems. I
need to have by defualt Username only.

You can type "machinename/username" in the username textfield if target
server is standalone server. If the target is include other domain, you can
type domain\username in the textfield.

No, you dont get what im am trying to say, Lets say I have 5 domains and 20
servers Which I have setup to accept a Basic authentication of username and
password.

Username: ADMIN

PASWORD: XXXXX

I dont want domains or machine names in the username field. this creates
extra steps not needed in the previos RDC Client.

All I need to do is click between the saved ips and or saved domain . This
is not possable in Vista because it forces you to use
Domain\Admin. What I would like is to use Admin only in that User name:
field without Vista forcing domain\ before the logon name. That is why im
sugesting this be changed back to the old way in XP. the way it is now i have
to get a failed logon then change back to minus the domain\Admin to just
Admin.

Hi,

You can do try this,

Got Start - Run and type "control keymgr.dll". This will give you options to
store your credentials for servers. Just Add the IP address of the sever you
need to Log on to and Username and Password. Select "A Web site or program
credential" as credential type and OK.

Then Start - Run - "mstsc" and click on Options - Advanced tab. Select
Authenticatin options: Always connect, even if authentication fails. Click on
general tab and Save As.

This will aviod any other windows, but will come to the logon screen of the
server with the username field entered. You will have to enter password to
login.

Hope it helps :)

Yes this absolutly worked. but it should not be that difficult to do. it
should be easily changable in the RDC Client. That is my sugestion And thanks
for your help it did work for me.

But it doesn't work for me. Our users need to access our terminal server
from arbitrary external PCs. We have provided them with a CD which makes an
SSH connection and then runs Remote Desktop. We have automated this as much
as possible, so that it prompts them for their username and only asks for
their password for the SSH connection and for the RDP connection.
Now, Vista has broken it, the RDP connection fails because it tries to
connect as a local user and not a domain user.
Givern that our users could be connecting from anywhere, on machines which
they have no control over, how can we make this work?
