Remote Desktop Connection to computer behind a gateway

M

Mickey

I'm trying to setup remote desktop connection. My office
has a XP pro server setup with DSL. The DSL comes in
through a Cayman gateway. The server itself has a local
network address (192.168.xxx.xxx). I can't open a remote
desktop connection through the internet via the computer
name, the computer IP address (obviously), or the gateway
address. Any suggestions on how to set this up or other
solutions I can consider. Thanks in advance.

You need to forward TCP Port 3389 through the Cayman gateway to the private LAN IP of the PC. Call
using the public IP of the gateway device. Consult the manufacturers documentation or support web
site for help forwarding ports...

Hi, Mickey -

192.168.x.x is a nonroutable network - you can't hit it
from the Internet.

What you may be able to do is use a technique called port
forwarding on your gateway to forward traffic on port
3389 to the Windows XP machine - in that case you'd
connect to the gateway address, not to the workstation
address.

This can open up a fair-sized security hole, though.
Best to be a bit careful with this.

good luck!
