I am having a problem signing onto a remote system (surprise). I
can connect ok, but when I get the remote window, it closes the
connection before I even get a chance to sign on, with no
indication what the problem might be. The strange this is, this
worked fine until tonight. There are two things I have done
since it last worked: I changed my logon password on the remote
system (but I'm not even getting to the logon point), and I
upgraded the firmware on my D-Link DI-614+ router. I'm not sure
what in the router could cause a problem, but I guess anything
is possible. Suggestions? Both machines are WinXP Pro.

See if the router is the problem. Don't use it, connect directly to your
ISP. You may have to reset your DSL/Cable Modem to do this (maybe not) or
it may not work at all depending on how they manage things (if you had to
give them the MAC address of the router at some point, this whole
recommendation is worthless. heh)

If you CAN connect directly to your ISP that way and get a DHCP or even a
static IP from them without the router, then try to connect to the remote
system. (I am assuming this remote system was not hooked to the router we
just disconnected. hah) If it works - Blame D-Link. If it doesn't - come
back and post more. =)

Thanks for the reply. I can't say I was real excited about the
prospect of rearranging my home system and network so I could
try it without the router, but I realized that a better test
would be to try it from another machine here at work, and it
failed the same way here. So I can rule out my router and the
VPN software I'm using to get to my work machine. Any ideas why
RDC would be rejecting the connection after allowing it to open?
Is there any way to find some debugging information like logs?

Would the fact that I changed my logon password make any
difference? I wouldn't think so but it's the only thing I can
think of that has changed on this system. I guess I could try
rebooting as well.
