I am attempting to install the RDC functionality on my Windows XP pro system,
however the installer progresses to about 75% and then stalls. Eventually
(up to perhaps 30 minutes later) it reports "Installer is no longer
responding" with an option to retry or cancel, retry simply repeats with the
same message. I've tried restarting the computer and also intalling in safe
mode but i get nowhere, always the same symptoms. Everything else appears to
run perfectly.

The Remote Desktop client is already installed on Windows XP (Pro or
Home). It is under Accessories->Communications.

You can also start it by running mstsc from either the Start=>Run or
by a command line.

The server side component can only be enabled or disabled - there is
no installation for it...

Many thanks for the information, worked a treat. Still doesn't explain the
installer hanging.

It shouldn't have hung... That's weird... You normally can reinstall
over the copy of the application you have installed...

Likely (since it already existed on the machine) - it was (in some part)
already active - meaning you were trying to install over a file in use..
Which it did not know how to handle (or was perhaps waiting on the file to
NOT be in use.)
