remote desktop connection from windows 2000 to windows xp

Hi,

Is it possible to establish a remote desktop connection from windows 2000
professional to windows xp professional, ie, 2000 is the host & xp is the
client. I know the other way round works. But i couldn't find any info on
this way through web search.

No, not natively.

Look at using something like UltraVNC as an alternative. Download the
server, viewer, encryption plug-in and mirror video driver from...

It is possible. You need to download and install the Windows
Remote Desktop Connection software from Microsoft.

Whether or not it is possible depends on what part of the message you read.

The subject: "remote desktop connection from windows 2000 to windows xp"
- Certainly - you can install the client on Windows 2000 and connect to the
Windows XP Professional (or superset) host machine.

The first part of the message body: "Is it possible to establish a remote
desktop connection from windows 2000 professional to windows xp
professional"
- Certainly - you can install the client on Windows 2000 and connect to the
Windows XP Professional (or superset) host machine.

The middle part: "2000 is the host & xp is the client"
- Nope. Windows 2000 Professional cannot be a host - it can run the client
however.

Now - the part that makes me wonder what was actually being asked the most,
"I know the other way round works" - and that really makes me think they
have tried Windows 2000 with a client to a Windows XP host - and that worked
fine... But they cannot figure out how to use the Windows 2000 as the host
(machine being remoted into) and the Windows XP machine as the client
(remoting from.)

The whole thing is quite confusing...

However - the general facts of the matter are:
- Windows 2000 Professional cannot be remotely controlled via native
Microsoft Remote Desktop software.
- Windows XP Professional can be controlled from various Windows and other
Operating system machines - as long as you have the proper CLIENT installed
to make the connection to the HOST machine (The host could be Windows XP or
superset, Windows 2000/2003/2003r2 Server editions, Vista or Windows Server
2008.)

Now - finding the archive of this complete conversation (August 13, 2007) -
I can see that the original poster was obviously asking about using the
Windows 2000 Professional machine as the host/server and remotely
controlling it using Remote Desktop from a Windows XP Professional machine -
which would not work and they were very happy with the answer given to them
of "Use UltraVNC"...

I respectfully beg to differ - I have used RDC Web connection with Win 2000
as the host and XP as the client.
the problem now is that on a different win2000 server, it no longer works,
neither does thick client Remote Desktop
work, even though I've installed the RDP download from MS and this service
is indeed running.

would anyone have any suggestions, other than to use UltraVNC?

The xact error is:

"the client could not connect to the remote computer. Remote connections
might not be enabled...."

both web and thick client interfaces give the same error.

I would appreciate any suggestions. thank you in advance.

The original post was about Windows 2000 Professional.
You seem to be speaking of Windows 2000 Server.
These are not the same products.
 
thanks Shenan - you are correct, we are on W2000 server. so would you know
of a workaround for this?
