First try if you can ping the machine (XP-Pro) from your Win98 machines
continuously. (Ping -t <XP-Pro>). While you're pinging try connecting to the
XP-Pro machine, check if you see any dropped packets. Look into the
eventviewer (eventvwr.exe) to see if you find any interesting entries. Do
you have anyother firewall issues that you think can cause this? Also, can
you make sure that other machines can RD to this XP-Pro box and the problem
is with only this Win98 machine. I'd also suggest dowloading the latest
client from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/rdclientdl.asp
Hope this helps.

I have a fairly new system running xp pro have gone through RD setup,
however I can not connect from my win 98 desktop to the XP-pro using RD on
my home LAN. RD gives a timeout error. I can netmeeting between the two
boxes if I initiate from the XP-Pro box, however this does not work in
reverse. The 98 box can RD successfully to other boxes over the internet.
Any help in diagnosing this would be greatly appreciated
