I have a fairly new system running xp pro have gone through RD setup, however I can not connect from my win 98 desktop to the XP-pro using RD on my home LAN. RD gives a timeout error. I can netmeeting between the two boxes if I initiate from the XP-Pro box, however this does not work in reverse. The 98 box can RD successfully to other boxes over the internet. Any help in diagnosing this would be greatly appreciated

First try if you can ping the machine (XP-Pro) from your Win98 machines
continuously. (Ping -t <XP-Pro>). While you're pinging try connecting to the
XP-Pro machine, check if you see any dropped packets. Look into the
eventviewer (eventvwr.exe) to see if you find any interesting entries. Do
you have anyother firewall issues that you think can cause this? Also, can
you make sure that other machines can RD to this XP-Pro box and the problem
is with only this Win98 machine. I'd also suggest dowloading the latest
client from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/rdclientdl.asp

Hope this helps.

Hi thanks for the suggestions.

I'll try to RD from another box and the other suggestions. One other thing is the win 98 box has no issues terminal servicing into other boxes except this one. I've checked the firewall settings on the xp-pro box and it is not enabled. I have a router that acts as a firewall for my LAN.

One other thing of note I tried disabling the anti-virus S/W and also installing VNC on the XP box but no luck initiating a connection from the win98 box. This really seems as though there is something on the xp-pro box rejecting these type of connection requests. Although, there is nothing in any of the event logs that shows an error. One other thing of note is that file sharing only seems to work one way that is I can access shares on the win 98 box from the xp-pro box but not vice-versa.

I tried RD from another box and received the same result, also tried ping -t but did not see any lost packets.

Any other thoughts on how to diagnose this issue?
